Navigating the First Days After Loss

When you lose your spouse, it feels like your world is spinning out of control. And it is. The first days are often filled with a numb, surreal quality that makes it hard to focus on anything.

Your thoughts may range from, “Did this really happen?” to “Are they really gone?

Give yourself permission to feel whatever comes naturally—whether it is shock, disbelief, or profound sadness.

It’s okay to lean on friends and family for support. Remember, you don’t have to go through this alone. Take things one moment at a time, and don’t pressure yourself to “be strong” or “hold it together.”

Simply being present and allowing yourself to grieve is enough. Small acts of self-care, like drinking water, eating small meals, and resting, are vital. Your grief is a reflection of the love you shared, and honoring that love with kindness to yourself is a meaningful start on this journey.
